These seven ceramic birds hung in a descending slanted line, resemble still motion shots of a bird falling from the sky. Every bird is identical in form, made in a handcrafted two-part plaster mold, but each is individually contorted to show a progression of movement. The ceramic was raku-fired to appear cracked and weathered and intentionally remain non-vitrified and fragile.
The seven birds represented the seven memorable deaths I had experienced at that time.
Neuroscientific research shows that under traumatic stress, the brain can fragment, blur, and hide memories. This defense mechanism allows for survival, but unprocessed emotions concealed in the body manifest as anxiety, depression, and/or dissociation.
This piece reflects the slow-motion feeling of moving through life, day by day, with depression.
