A ceramic lamb form overextends itself in a contorted manner and is hung by a rope from the ceiling. It has subtle pinks of underglaze and oil paint under its full coat of hand-processed wool. There is a red band around its tail for the purpose of docking. Lambs’ tails are traditionally docked to make maintenance of them easier, prevent disease, and for aesthetic reasons.

I am inspired by the mystery of brain function, memory, and instinct—how our hands understand what the mind cannot articulate. I often create before fully understanding the work’s meaning; only after do I recognize how material and my subconscious have guided me. This being my most recent work, I haven’t had enough time to sit with this lamb and precisely verbalize what I am conveying through her. I believe that this is the beauty in working with your hands and trusting your instincts.
